About Us
Our Methods
We have turned the conventional wisdom on its head. Our approach uses very large John Deere four wheel drive tractors, pulling 17 yard scrapers, to excavate, haul, and place material. Each "train" has 20 tired, and that gives us good flotation, but also excellent compaction in the fills. We do not use rollers to supplement the compactive effort. The pans cut evenly, and we place the material in the fills in the thin ribbons, which make it easier to complete the finish grade task. In fact, we are using laser attachments on some pans in lieu of dozers and graders for finish grade work, and that has produces even more savings of time and money for our customers.
Depending on the type of material, we haul anywhere from 24 bank yards at a time with double 17 yard pans in loamy soils, to 16 yards in the sugar sands found in some parts of the country. On occasion, we are able to utilize triple scrapers for long hauls; those trains will move up to 40 bank yards per load.
We sometimes use single pans when doing intricate work such as golf course hole shaping, or balancing for sections of roadway where the distances make it uneconomical for a dozer to push dirt.
Operating Management and Philosophy
Pull Pans has solid and stable management with extensive experience in all kinds of projects across the country. We have worked on reclamation projects in Oregon where round the clock operations were necessary to meet a tight deadline imposed by the Army Corps of Engineers, subdivisions along Colorado's Front Range featuring 28 foot sub-excavations, and numerous highways, commercial and environmental projects throughout the United States. We have consistently delivered timely project completions within our customers' budgets.
Our approach to projects and customers is simple. Rather than focusing on our own short term potential gains, we place a big emphasis on value engineering (VE) ideas that will help our customers save money. We are geared to developing long term relationships, and the success of our VE approach is evidences by the fact that we have a number of such relationships. It is sometimes easier and more convenient not to question the conventional wisdom, but we do not take the path. On every project that we bid, we ask the questions of how we can do something different, and at a lower cost. This approach promotes dialogues with our customers, and from that comes good ideas that will save time and money.
Financial Stability
Pull Pans owns virtually all of its equipment; on rare occasion, we rent an item for a particular need. We have a conservative capital structure, and we maintain a relatively "no frills" approach to our overhead. As a result, we are able to be very competitive on our bids, and still deliver a consistent high quality service to our customers, even when the industry as a whole is experiencing difficulties. We have an excellent reputation with our vendors, and that, along with our solid machinery ownership position, is an element of much comfort to our customers. They know that we have the financial ability to get the job done.
Safety/Maintenance
Pull Pans is a drug free workplace. We also have an excellent safety record, with no lost time accidents for the past six years. We have never had an OSHA recordable accidents. We promote a culture of safety with pre-employment safety briefings for new employees, regular safety meetings, and incentives for our employees to think and practice safety at all times.
We take pride in our equipment maintenance. Several mechanics with well-equipped service trucks tend to our fleet. We have a strict program of regular oil samples, and we provide instruction to all employees in proper periodic maintenance.
Employees
Pull Pans would not be a successful company without the dedication from our employees. They go the extra mile to do a good job, and we consistently get feedback from our customers about how much they enjoy working with our crews. We have had a very low turnover rate during the past six years (much less than the industry average), and we strive to create an environment where the achievements of our employees are well recognized. The simple act of saying thanks for a job well done translates into happy employees, and that translated into good efforts for our customers.
